Beastly Expeditions
(The Loch Ness Monster)

After visiting Loch Ness several times and observing the innumerable philosophical arguments regarding the possible taxon of this 'creature', I am of the belief that Nessie & Friends, most generally fall into the category of the 'plesiosaur-type'. Not a popular opinion these days, but in my opinion, the best fit, for what witnesses most often describe seeing. With 2018 being one of the most prolific years for Nessie sightings on record, including several 'head and neck' sightings, something that was said to be a rarity - this mystery or controversy, promises to live on for years to come.

Beastly Expeditions
(The Werewolf of Camberwell)

Camberwell Old Cemetery is located on Forest Hill Road, Honor Oak, London. It has been in use since 1856 and covers approximately 30 acres of land, much of whose plants and trees have merged with the older tombstones, to create an eerie ‘forest of the dead’ like feeling. The site was in frequent use from its inception and by 1984, 300,000 bodies had been buried there.

Now, cemeteries are creepy enough places during the day, but at night, that inexplicable fear of the unknown that we all possess becomes a living force. I was originally drawn to investigate this location due to two extraordinary witness accounts. The first related by a man who had decided to cut through the old cemetery one night on route to visit a friend, in 1996 And the second many years later in 2004/5, related by a woman who was travelling past the graveyard, with a friend when she experienced something she still cannot explain to this day.

The photos I took whilst there do not quite convey the unhealthy atmosphere, which was palpable, all around. Although, admittedly, visiting the site of such extraordinary sightings does imbue oneself with a sense of expectation, which in itself can become a causative of feeling  ‘ghostly vibes’!

The Werewolf of Camberwell

On October 9th, 1996, a man on route to see a friend, had decided to take a shortcut through Camberwell Old Cemetery to save time, when something prodigiously strong grabbed him by the arm and smashed him into the ground. He saw a large creature, with dark fur and a head like a German shepherd, looking at directly at him intently, slobbering and growling and sniffing his body up and down, just as a dog would. Just as quickly as the attack started, it was over and the beast sprinted off on its hind legs. The witness believed that he was spared because he suffers from a disease that dogs can smell and that probably because of this, the creature left him alone.

The Camberwell Tree Shaker

“It was in 2004 or 2005 on a summer's night around 11.30pm and a friend and I were walking up Underhill road on the cemetery side of the road. I lived on Barry Road on the corner of Underhill road for many years and I was in my mid-20s at this point.

On the corner of the cemetery side of the road, we heard a really loud weird noise and both turned to look. A large tree in the corner of the cemetery was shaking incredibly hard as if something really powerful was shaking it with all its might. I don't think I have ever seen such a strange sight. It was definitely not made by a person or an animal or pet. The tree looked as if the roots were ready to be ripped out. There was another noise too like a low growl.

Needless to say, my friend and I took to our heels and fled as fast as we possibly could although in different directions. I sprinted up Harcourt road as hard as I could. When my friend caught up with me, we were both terrified and could not rationalise what had happened or account for the sheer terror we both felt. Instinctively, we knew we had to get as far away from the flimsy fence of the cemetery as fast as we possibly could.

There is something very sinister there. I don't think I ever walked past the road in the dark ever again or ever ventured inside the cemetery. I have moved away from the area now, but still not far enough away from that place!!!”

Beastly Expeditions
(The Box Hill Ape)

Box Hill, near Dorking in Surrey, is a beautiful National park set among miles of fields and forests in the Surrey Hills. the area is a 422 km² Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Surrey, England or AONB as they are known here and covers one-quarter of the county of Surrey. Surrey Hills AONB also adjoins the Kent Downs AONB to the east and the South Downs National Park in the south-west.

This area has also been the site of 3 separate British Bigfoot encounters (2 visual and one auditory bluff charge.) These sightings are compelling in their corroboration with other reported Bigfoot encounters in Britain and North America.

The most detailed of these 3 accounts took place near the bottom of the earthen steps that ascend the 735ft hill, near the 'Stepping Stones' that cross the river mole and also make mention of the creature being seen by motorists running along the Zig Zags (the name of the sharp road that ascends the hill) around about the same time period. Additionally, a large roaring creature was encountered auditorily in a disused WW2 railway tunnel in nearby Dorking Deepdene, just 4 years later!

I went to investigate this area and was taken aback by its breathtaking beauty and unspoilt and barely inhabited countryside and felt convinced that after dark, it would be very easy for a large creature to traverse this locale in almost total anonymity

The Box Hill Ape and  - Witness report:

“I was by the stepping stones in the summer of 2012, it was late evening and I was running the steps leading up to Box Hill, on the North Downs in Surrey. During my training session, I had heard, what I now believe to be wood knocking. I can’t say how many knocks because at the time my focus was on training and I did not know that wood knocks have been linked to what I was about to see. I just remember thinking to myself ‘what’s that noise?’ as it was loud, but distant and seemed to come from several directions. I had finished my training and sat down on the steps to drink my recovery drink and just enjoy the cooler air of the summer evening. It was about 25 minutes before anything happened, it was still daylight and I could hear footsteps coming down the hill. I didn't look around at this point as I was expecting a dog walker to go by and I was sat to the side, out of the way. I then realized that the person walking down the stairs had stopped. I could hear breathing and I had an unsettled feeling, that I was being watched. I turned and looked over my right shoulder. Stood there about 10 meters back to my right-hand side and up the steps was what I honestly believe to be some sort of ape. The fur was a brown colour with patches of grey. The face was very human with a flat nose but the jaw was big, it looked out of proportion to the head. The head was domed at the top, the animal stood on two legs, but appeared to slump forward and the arms were long in proportion to the body. The animal was very thick built. I can only say solid muscle. It was frightening the build of this thing. I'm not sure the height from the angle I was at. I could only estimate 6-foot plus, but I'm not sure. The animal stood staring at me for about 30ish seconds before turning around and walking off, but still watching me. As it left I could smell a stale farm animal type smell that lingered. I did hear that someone had said that a creature like this had been seen running around the same time, by several motorists. I have never been able to get this confirmed and Surrey police don’t seem to want to discuss this subject."

Dorking Deepdene Creature:

Two explorers visited an abandoned tunnel in Dorking Deepdene late one evening in 2016. Hearing noise inside and thinking it was other explorers they waited outside for them to finish. Out of nowhere, their two dogs started barking then were suddenly silenced by a loud Roar. Then they heard the sound of something big moving the trees, breaking and snapping branches like they were twigs and then it stopped. After 10 mins of sitting in silence afraid to even breathe, the brothers left the area, slowly. Returning some days later, they found a large footprint around 20 inches long and 8 inches wide at the top and about 3 inches wide at the bottom.

HELP SUPPORT THE HUNT:

I am currently preparing to record a new teaser trailer for my TV series - Beasts of Britain, booking talks in the UK and the US for 2019 and writing my new title, 'Beasts of North America'. All of these things, of course, cost time and money and are currently self-funded. I would be grateful for a cup of ko-fi to see me through. Best regards, Andy McGrath
